My simplest tips for healthy habits this year

I chatted to Wendy Petrie on TVNZ’s Breakfast show about getting back on track with nutrition as we head into a new year.

Here’s a snapshot of the key ideas we discussed:

🌱 Focus on addition, not subtraction

Rather than taking a restriction mindset to food, think about what you can add in. Aim for mostly whole foods that are delicious and nourishing for both your body and mind.

🎯 Choose just one new habit at a time

This might be eating five handfuls of vegetables a day, packing a nourishing lunch, or heading out for a 20-minute walk each morning. Pick one small change, let it become part of your routine, then start with the next step.

🗓️ Think ahead

Set aside 10–15 minutes on the weekend to plan the week ahead. Factor in commitments and busy evenings, and decide which nights need a quick 10-minute meal - a little forward thinking goes a long way.

🥪 Keep it simple

When it comes to kids’ lunchboxes (and life in general!), simple works well. Use breakfast and dinner as opportunities for balanced meals with plenty of veggies, protein and fibre - then you can feel more relaxed about lunchboxes if needed.

📵 Start your day the right way

Try beginning your morning without technology (your inbox will still be there later).

Finally, consider choosing a single word as your anchor for the year. Mine is slow (I have a tendency to rush!). Yours might be simple or calm. Come back to your word whenever you need a gentle reminder of how you want to show up and make decisions.
