Things I've learnt this month: August
🔥 I was lucky enough to get a tour of our local fire station with our Scout group. I even got a ride in their truck and I learnt some super interesting things!
3 things I didn’t know about NZ’s Fire Service…
1️⃣ Most Firefighters are Volunteers
There are around 1,800 paid firefighters in Aotearoa - but they’re joined by over 12,000 dedicated volunteers who respond to emergencies in their communities 👏
2️⃣ More Than Just Fires
The majority of callouts aren’t actually for fires - they’re for medical emergencies, car crashes, and natural disasters. Firefighters are trained in advanced first aid and often arrive before ambulances 👨🚒
3️⃣ They Respond Every 7 Minutes
Fire and Emergency NZ responds to an emergency on average every 7 minutes, 24/7, 365 days a year. That’s over 80,000 callouts a year! 🚨
We hear so much bad news in the world, but I have to say, after my time with the team and understanding just how many people in New Zealand give up their time for FREE to help other people, it has restored my faith in humanity. There are some amazing people in our communities 💛

What else I’ve learnt this month:
1️⃣ Almost half of NZ’s 112,500 homeless are under 25 💔 @kick_back_make_change
2️⃣ Why can it be so hard to keep weight off? For every 1kg you lose: 🔻 You burn about 30 fewer calories a day, plus you can also often feel hungrier when you start cutting back on calories. (Zachary Knight)
👉🏼 Keeping yourself feeling full with adequate protein and fibre as well as ensuring you are active and including strength training is really helpful.
3️⃣ Loneliness at work is real 💼 1 in 5 NZ employees report feeling lonely on the job (University of Canterbury).
It’s a reminder that connection and kindness matter more than we think ❤️
What’s something you learnt this month?
